Default Gateway
The default next hop for traffic leaving the local subnet
Core Idea
A default gateway is the next-hop address a device uses when traffic needs to leave its local subnet. Devices talk directly inside the same network, but everything beyond that boundary starts with the gateway.
Why It Matters Here
Mathbong uses default gateways repeatedly in OPNsense and Proxmox layouts because one wrong gateway value can bypass the entire firewall and NAT design. It is one of the smallest settings with the biggest architectural effect.
