Base value
The reference value that a comparison or change is measured against
Core Idea
Base value is the denominator or starting point that gives a comparison its meaning. In data interpretation, the same change amount can lead to different conclusions if the base value changes, so you need to fix the baseline before you calculate.
Many mistakes come from solving first and checking the denominator later. A safer habit is to rewrite the question as "compared to what?" before turning anything into a formula.
Why It Matters Here
In Mathbong's NCS numeracy posts, base value connects ratio reading, index-number interpretation, and percentage-change questions. Once the base value is clear, it becomes much easier to move from rates back to actual counts or amounts.
