Markdown
A text format using simple symbols for document structure
Core idea
Markdown describes headings, lists, and emphasis using text symbols. Files typically use the .md extension. Edit the source in a text editor and read its formatted version in a preview.
Example
## Learning goal marks a heading, 1. Compare fractions. creates a numbered item, and **Important condition** marks emphasis in a supporting renderer.
Worksheet analysis can use separate headings for source explanations, examples, questions, and the teacher's notes. The next task can read the same file to recover those decisions.
Manuscript and output
Markdown records content structure. HTML and print CSS determine A4 margins and page breaks in the output stage. Table and mathematics support varies between tools. When using LaTeX notation, check the equations in the actual preview.
Professional terminology
Markdown is a lightweight markup language. CommonMark defines a common syntax; tables and mathematics may be extensions. A Markdown parser or renderer converts source text into a format such as HTML.
